When is it useful

Urinary tract infections, orUTIs,
occur when bacteria enter through the urethra
and colonize the urinary tract.

In women, UTIs are a very common ailment due to
the particular female anatomy. In women, the urethra
is shorter than in men. This means that bacteria have
less "distance" to travel to reach the bladder and cause infection.
Furthermore, female hormones play an important role in
maintaining the balance of "good" bacteria in intimate areas. When
this balance is disturbed, the risk of infection increases.

Although less exposed, men can also suffer from UTIs. Among
the most frequent causes of UTIs in men are: prostate pathologies such as
prostatic hyperplasia or chronic bacterial prostatitis, urethritis, and poor hydration.

In general, UTIs are often underestimated because they are not always
visible to the naked eye. To make an accurate diagnosis, the doctor
must analyze a urine sample (urine culture). So, even if
typical symptoms such as difficulty urinating, which manifests
as pain and burning during urination, frequent and urgent need to urinate,
but with small amounts of urine passed, are present, it is important to do all the necessary tests.

UTIs can
beacuteorchronic, and this
distinction is fundamental for planning the best treatment
and reducing the use of antibiotics, which should only be used
when strictly necessary.
