When is it useful

Vitreous degeneration is a condition resulting from changes affecting the vitreous body—a transparent, gelatinous mass located between the lens and the retina. The vitreous body (or simply the vitreous) accounts for more than two-thirds of the eyeball's total volume and consists of 99% water, with the remainder made up of collagen fibers, hyaluronic acid, minerals, and vitamins. Individuals affected by vitreous changes begin to see mobile bodies floating within their field of vision. Scientifically, these are known as myodesopsia—or commonly as "eye floaters"—because patients perceive them as annoying insects that disrupt their vision. As the vitreous loses its original consistency and liquefies, the separation of the vitreous from the retina is perceived by the individual as a sudden flash or bursts of light (phosphenes).
