What is it

Inositol is a polyol that exists in nine different stereoisomers, among which Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol are the most biologically relevant. Both act as second messengers of insulin, regulating different insulin-dependent processes and each contributing specifically to proper glucose metabolism. Furthermore, Myo-inositol also functions as a second messenger for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which regulates follicular growth up to ovulation.

Manganese is a micronutrient that acts as a cofactor for many metalloenzymes and proteins involved in cellular metabolism and in major oxidative stress response pathways. Manganese is essential for obtaining the intracellular active form of D-chiro-inositol.

Folic Acid is a water-soluble B vitamin. It contributes to normal amino acid metabolism and plays a role in the process of cell division. It supports maternal tissue growth during pregnancy and contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin synthesized by the body upon exposure to sunlight. It helps maintain normal bones and is involved in the process of cell division. Vitamin D is an essential hormone in regulating the calcium/phosphorus balance and plays a role in the pathogenesis of inflammation, insulin resistance and obesity.

When is it useful

Inositol has been renamed the “fertility molecule”. Gynecologists are increasingly recommending inositol-based supplements for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and for women who want to become pregnant. This is because recent studies have shown how regular use of these supplements has a high level of effectiveness and above all the absence of side effects.

Inositol has a positive effect on ovarian function and is useful for correcting endocrine-metabolic disorders related to polycystic ovary syndrome, such as hyperandrogenism, hyperglycaemia, and increased insulin resistance. Inositol is a molecule that is found in different forms, but only two of these have shown from clinical studies to be insulin mediators and therefore useful for treating ovarian polycystosis: Myo-inositol (MI) and D-chiroinositol (DCI).
