Insulin resistance is linked to an alteration in the ratio between myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol, caused by reduced activity of the epimerase enzyme. Inositol is a cyclic polyol considered part of the B-vitamin complex. Various forms (stereoisomers) of inositol exist in nature; the most important are known as myo-inositol (MI) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI). Both MI and DCI isomers act as insulin second messengers, yet they regulate distinct insulin-dependent processes and contribute in different ways to proper glucose metabolism. These inositols—myo-inositol (MI) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI)—have a positive effect on endocrine-metabolic disorders such as hyperandrogenism, hyperglycemia, and increased insulin resistance; by lowering androgen levels, they help reduce body hair and eliminate acne. Folate contributes to normal amino acid metabolism and plays a role in cell division. It also contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism. Manganese is a micronutrient essential for generating the active intracellular form of DCI.

When is it useful

Hyperandrogenism in women indicates an excessive production of male hormones (androgens)—specifically testosterone—by the endocrine glands, namely the adrenal glands and ovaries. Symptoms of hyperandrogenism can vary in severity depending on the amount of excess male hormones produced, but generally include androgenetic alopecia, hirsutism (hair growth in areas typically associated with men), acne, menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, and infertility.
