N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the N-acetyl derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine. It is an important reducing agent, known for its marked antioxidant properties. NAC is able to increase the plasma levels of a primary antioxidant naturally present in our body, glutathione, an important enzyme cofactor highly protective against oxidation processes.
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid, has unique antioxidant properties: it protects nerve fibers and cells from damage by free radicals both in the aqueous (cytoplasm) and lipid cellular compartments (cell membrane). In addition, it regenerates other antioxidant molecules (vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, vitamin E).
In Naxend®, alpha-lipoic acid is present within a polymer matrix which allows controlled and prolonged release of the active substance over time (which otherwise would have a very low half-life time). This allows a maximum absorption of the alpha-lipoic acid protracted over time, optimizes the number of daily administrations and allows a lower dosage of alpha-lipoic acid compared to common formulations.
Bromelain, an enzyme obtained from the pineapple, has a natural anti-inflammatory action.
